Patten House hits the international market for $1.8 million

The Patten House in Palatine is officially on the market.
Friday, it was listed for just under $1.8 million through Sotheby’s International, a high-end real estate firm run by the well-known auction house of the same name.

This comes just days after the Palatine Village Council voted against buying the historic home at 117 N. Benton St. - despite an April referendum in which 70 percent of voters endorsed the idea of the village purchasing the house if another agency paid to run it.

But since then, there’s been a lot of back-and-forth between village and park district officials, who’d offered up $50,000 a year to maintain the home.

Another point of contention is that a 2005 appraisal of the home shows it valued at $1.55 million. Charles Patten of Inverness, who’s in charge of selling the family home, said that was the price he’d sell it for to the village.

But a new appraisal ordered by elected officials a few weeks ago came back with $1.25 million price tag.
Patten had set a firm deadline of Friday for the village to meet his asking price.
“I had a sneaking suspicion that this was not going to happen,” he said. “Sotheby’s is worldwide, and this is a unique house. They were eager to have it.”

The listing boasts the Patten House as an 1898 historic landmark mansion.
It calls the home ideally suited for a cultural arts or community group or single family. The listing also says the property could be available for development and the size is suitable for four build-able lots.

The agent for the house, Ron Goldstein, said being listed with Sotheby’s will give the house access to the “international market.”
