Green:Make Your Own Mulch
Mulching is one of the best things you can do for your garden. It's also one of the easiest. But buying bags of mulch can get expensive. So instead of making trips to the garden supply store, why not make your own?
Organic mulch does much more than simply make your yard look more attractive. It has many ecological benefits, like:
* Protects the soil from erosion
* Conserves moisture and reduces the need for watering
* Helps to maintain an even soil temperature
* Prevents weed growth
* Improves the overall condition of the soil
The best part is you can find the materials to make mulch in your own yard. Lawn clippings make excellent mulch for a vegetable garden, but if you're looking for a better-looking mulch for your landscaping needs you can make it out of ground corn cobs, pine needles, newspaper, leaves, hay or straw, and of course, bark chips.
You should remove any weeds from your garden before applying mulch. And don't apply mulch in direct contact with your plants; leave about an inch of space around them to prevent diseases that can occur due to excessive humidity.
